How can you have the birth YOU want? A more peaceful, joyous, safe, or empowering birth?
Hire a doula.
WHAT IS A DOULA?
Doula- (doo•la) n;
a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during, and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.
Doulas provide physical support through the use of positioning, gentle touch, counter pressure, breathing techniques, providing water, etc. They also offer emotional support-- a nurturing, encouraging connection during the turbulence of labor. Doulas are advocates for parents in a medical setting; suggesting options and supporting decisions made by parents. Doulas support birth partners (husbands, grandmas, girlfriends) in being as involved as they feel comfortable. Physical and emotional support makes a huge difference for the whole birth team.
It has been observed that when continuous labor support was provided by a doula the following was experienced :
-
31% decrease in the use of Pitocin*
-
28% decrease in the risk of C-section*
-
12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth*
-
9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
-
14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery
-
34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience*
